Event marks 120th anniversary of Tupsley Murder

12 October 2007

Herefordshire Council's archive service is staging a free event to mark the 120th anniversary of the notorious Tupsley Murder.

The murder victim was an 87-year-old Philip Ballard, a kindly, respected and very wealthy man who lived at The Knoll, Tupsley.

On the night of October 20, 1887, local man James Jones and Alfie Scandrett broke into the Knoll and ransacked the house, taking jewellery and other valuables. In the process, they also broke into Mr Ballard's bedroom and dealt him several fatal blows to the head with a hatchet. Both men were hanged for this crime in the following March.

The event "Murderous Hereford" is being held at St. Paul's Church Community Centre, Church Road, Tupsley, Hereford, from 11am until 4pm on Saturday, October 27.

There will be an exhibition of relevant archives, competitions and children's activities, a chance to meet a "real" Victorian policeman and light refreshments.

Elizabeth Semper O'Keefe, Herefordshire Council's information services manager, said: "This will be a fantastic opportunity to come along and be a witness to crime and punishment in Victorian Hereford."
