Libraries join community read

29 May 2007

Herefordshire libraries are joining in with the biggest community read ever.

The book will be Black Swan Green by David Mitchell. The aim is to get as many people across the country as possible to read and talk about the book.

People will be encouraged to fill in postcards with their thoughts about the book or put them on the website http://www.blackswangreen.co.uk/

The book has a local connection, being set in a Worcestershire village, and is about a year in the life of Jason, a stammering 13 year old, who keeps his poetry writing secret and tries desperately to fit in and be cool. Stuffed full of early eighties nostalgia, it is a funny, poignant and deceptively easy read.

On Saturday, June 2, library staff will be on the cathedral green giving away 100 free copies of Black Swan Green. Library staff will be creating a giant black swan to sit on the green and the sound recording of the book will be playing, so people can have a quick taster of the story.

At Hereford, Ross, Leominster, Ledbury and Colwall, library staff will be giving away Black Swan Green postcards, bookmarks and first chapters.

There are lots of copies of the book available to borrow from the libraries and there are sets of the book available for readers groups.

The Ross-on-Wye book group will be discussing the book on Thursday, June 14 at 6.30pm at Ross library. Anyone who has read the book and would like to join in the discussion is welcome to come along.
