Recycling event in Hereford's High Town

22 May 2007

Herefordshire Council is staging a special Big Recycle Event in Hereford’s High Town on Wednesday, June 6, from 10am until 4pm.

The event will offer people a chance to learn all about recycling which both reduces the amount of rubbish sent to landfill and also saves energy, water and resources.

As part of the High Town event, the Big Green Recycling Bus will be offering information on all aspects of recycling. Visitors to the event will be able to pick up freebies and even watch displays of can can dancing. The can can dancers will be in High Town from 12.30pm until 1.30pm.

Richard Wood, Herefordshire Council’s waste services manager, said: “The growing need to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill sites means everyone has to get into the habit of recycling. This free event will offer householders a wealth of advice and tips on recycling and I would urge as many people as possible to come along.”

Herefordshire Council has already introduced kerbside recycling to meet EU and UK government targets.

Recyclable items are collected from the roadside throughout much of the county, expansion of kerbside recycling to other areas is also planned in the future.

Paper, light card and textiles should be put in the purple bag one week and cans and plastics in the clear sack the next week.

Items suitable for recycling are newspaper/magazines, junk mail and pamphlets, telephone directories and catalogues, light white cards (eg cereal boxes), photocopy and printer paper, letters, envelopes and greetings cards.

Clothing, towels, sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases can be recycled but all should be in a clean condition. No curtains, shoes, tights or underwear will be accepted.

Plastic bottles, milk containers, detergent and cleaning bottles and bottles for toiletries can all be recycled. Unfortunately, we cannot recycle yoghurt pots, butter/margarine or ice cream tubs, polystyrene food containers, ready meal trays, vending cups, tablet blister packs, plastic bags, crisp packets, cat/dog food pouches, plant pots and tetrapak cartons.

Food cans, pet food cans, clean aluminium foil, drinks cans and aerosol cans can be recycled but not paint tins.

Glass bottles and jars should be taken to one of the county’s 'Bring' sites.

Household waste sites at Hereford, Ross, Leominster, Bromyard and Ledbury offer facilities for householders to recycle green waste, soil and rubble, scrap metal, glass bottles and jars, cans, cardboard, paper, textiles, batteries, wood and timber, fridges/freezers and televisions.
