Busy night at the museum

14 May 2007

Hereford Museum will have a special late-night opening on Friday night with two major events taking place – the first screening of blockbuster film A Night at the Museum and the opening of a new exhibition featuring the Shell Advertising Art Collection.

All tickets to the four showings of family film A Night at the Museum, starring Ben Stiller, Robin Williams and Ricky Gervais, have been sold. The other three showings are on Saturday at 10.30am, Saturday at 2.30pm and Sunday at 2.30pm.

The film is a hilarious account of what happens when a museum caretaker, working the night shift, finds that some of the artefacts come to life, including a dinosaur.

Lesley Wells, visitor services officer for Herefordshire Museums, said: “We are delighted the four showings of the film are fully booked up and are also looking forward to the opening of our new exhibition which features work by some of the most gifted graphic artists in the 1920s and 1930s.”

The show which is at Hereford Museum and Art Gallery until July 4 is made up of three separate exhibitions: Visit Britain; People Prefer Shell and That’s Shell – That was!

Visit Britain shows how, from the 1920s, Shell took the whole of Britain as inspiration for one of its most effective advertising campaigns. People Prefer Shell focuses on a popular campaign that identified and portrayed an extraordinary range of people who relied on Shell products including racing drivers, farmers, scientists and film stars.  That’s Shell – That Was comprises 40 selected posters promoting motoring and its many pleasures.

Admission to Hereford Museum and Art Gallery is free with access for visitors with disabilities. The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am until 5pm, Sundays and Bank Holiday Monday, May 28, 10am until 4pm.
