Herefordshire Council contractors will be trimming some 5,500 km of roadside verges during the month of May.
The work is carried out to ensure highways are kept as safe as possible for pedestrians and motorists while also protecting and encouraging biodiversity.
Full width trimming is carried out on road bends and junctions to ensure good visibility for motorists and other areas receive a single swathe cut which allows roadside plants to flower and reseed behind the trimmed area.
Further trimming of roadside verges will be carried out in the months of July and August.
Herefordshire Council also works in conjunction with the Herefordshire Nature Trust and has identified 27 sites within the county which are of special botanical interest on roadside verges. These particular sites receive specialist maintenance in keeping with the flora and fauna of the site.
Pele Bhamber, head of highways and transportation, said: “This work must be carried out to ensure motorists in the county have good visibility, especially down the many country lanes in the county which can be difficult to negotiate if grass verges have become very overgrown.
“Signs will be in place warning of work taking place but I would also ask motorists to be aware as they may meet slow moving machines in the road and they should adjust their speed accordingly,” he added.
