Hereford Library staff have been busy raising funds to help one of their casual staff to realise her dream of teaching in Africa.
Rebecca Greenaway, who is currently studying for a Bachelor of Education degree in primary school teaching at Chester University, wants to give up a month of her own time to teach in a village school in Kenya.
She will be teaching at a school in Malaba, in July 2007. This is deprived and over-populated area where schools have extremely limited resources and she will be living in a Kenyan guest house which has basic facilities during her stay.
To finance the teaching practice Rebecca needs to raise £2,000 to cover the costs of food, flights and accommodation together with teaching resources for the schools she will be visiting.
Friends and her colleagues at Hereford Library, where Rebecca works as a casual library assistant, have been helping with the fund-raising by holding a raffle, bring and buy sales, a car boot sale and lots of cake eating, with all of these activities having raised more than £500.
Other ideas to add to the £528.78 already raised include a quiz night and possibly a sponsored slim, which is probably a good idea after all the cake eating!
Further donations would be gratefully received and anyone wishing to know more about Rebecca and her trip can contact Jane Greenaway on 01432 383062.
