Help us design winning logos

02 May 2007

Herefordshire Council has joined forces with the Journal series of newspapers to run a competition for children to design stickers for a new energy-saving initiative.

The competition, which will be judged by Herefordshire Council’s new Energy Champions, is open to all children who attend primary schools in the county.

Stickers are needed to support the council’s recently launched My Energy campaign which aims to reduce energy bills in council buildings by 10 per cent over a 12-month period.

One of the main focuses of the campaign is to get staff to switch off their computers when they are not in use such as during meetings, lunch hours and overnight.

Sadie Reade, sustainability officer, who is leading the My Energy campaign, said: “We are hoping youngsters can come up with some eye-catching and exciting designs for these stickers which will play an important part in publicising our campaign and getting the message across staff.

“We need the stickers to have a suitable slogan which promotes our two main aims of cutting energy bills and helping to reduce the impact our activities have on climate change,” Sadie added.

Children who produce the top three designs will win a family day out at the West Midland Safari Park, a prize which has been kindly donated by the Hereford Journal.

The overall winner will also get to see their winning design printed by the council’s printing contractors, Herefordshire Jarvis Services, at their Rotherwas base and then be able to post stickers up around some of the council’s buildings.

Working with registered charity Severn Wye Energy Agency (SWEA), the Manage Your Energy (MY Energy) project, which launched on May 1, will run for one year and aims to achieve a 10 per cent saving on electricity costs as part of the council’s Good Environmental Management (GEM) system.

Energy Champions have volunteered to work in the council’s buildings at Plough Lane, Garrick House, Brockington, Bath Street, Blackfriars Education and Conference Centre, Unit 10 Blackfriars, Blueschool House, Leominster Library, Grange Court in Leominster, Whitecross Road, Moor House, ICT at Thorn, Queenswood, Hereford Town Hall, Hereford library, Art Gallery and Museum, The Old Priory at Leominster and Herefordshire Jarvis Services at Unit 3 of Thorn.

Entries, which should be submitted on a postcard, should be posted to Stickers Competition, Hereford Journal, 178 Widemarsh Street, Hereford, HR4 9HN, to arrive no later than Friday, June 8.
