Rotherwas access road dig unveils Neolithic hut

23 April 2007

Herefordshire is giving up some of its secrets of the past in an archaeological dig taking place prior to the construction of the new Rotherwas access road.

The dig, to record archaeological remains known to be present along the route, is concentrating on an area to the south-west of Gatehouse Road in Rotherwas.

“We’ve found remains dating from the Neolithic to Roman periods,” said Julian Cotton, Herefordshire Council archaeological advisor.

“So far we’ve found the remnants of a Neolithic hut, a Bronze Age trackway and Roman boundary enclosures,” he added.

As well as the specific area being investigated prior to the construction of the new road, an archaeological “watching brief” is being maintained to ensure any finds uncovered during the project are recorded.
