Going green with bio fuels

17 April 2007

Herefordshire Council’s parks, countryside and leisure development service is boosting its green credentials by using biofuels to power its vehicles and equipment.

A new special bunded diesel storage tank has been installed at Queenswood Country Park.

This tank will allow the service’s vehicles and equipment to run on a special 30 per cent bio-blend diesel which will be supplied by Longma Biofuels of Rotherwas.

The 30 per cent recycled cooking oil is mixed with 70 per cent standard mineral diesel to provide a fuel that is eco-friendly but still compatible with all the different vehicles which are used on and off site.

Not only is the fuel reusing an otherwise waste product but it is also a cleaner way of burning.

James Bisset, principal countryside officer, said: “Our staff are looking forward to not having to go and fill the good old jerry cans any more but are concerned the rumoured smell of fish and chips the vehicles might emit will keep their stomachs rumbling all day long!”
