Chipping good time for countryside team

12 April 2007

Herefordshire Council’s Countryside Service has been making good use of their new wood chipper which was funded by a grant from the Queenswood Coronation Fund.

The ‘Timberwolf’ chipper has become a regular sight around Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum since it was donated last year and helps to keep Queenswood tidier and safer for the public.

Resulting woodchips are used to surface some of the paths, mulch newly planted trees and, when composted, they also make an excellent medium for planting.

James Bisset, principal countryside officer, said: “The chipper has also helped the countryside team to become more efficient by creating extra time for staff to carry out even more essential tree care and woodland management, the latter being especially valuable to the local dormouse and butterfly populations that thrive in the freshly coppiced woodland areas.”
