Workmen for Alfred McAlpine, the Council’s contractor, have been working at various points along the new route since March 12.
The most notable work is the construction of a short length of new carriageway to the west of the existing road just north of the Grafton Inn.
This section of road is being built to enable a switch over of traffic onto this route for a period of time during the project. It is necessary to switch traffic over to this temporary road to allow the safe diversion of BT cables and to start the construction of a new three-arm roundabout.
This temporary carriageway will allow two-way traffic throughout the works, with minimal impact on the travelling public.
However, during a two-week period starting on Monday, April 16, a number of nighttime lane closures are planned to enable the contractor to complete these temporary works (including the tie-ins to existing A49).
Further details of these closures will be advertised closer to these dates.
The full switch over of traffic onto this temporary road is scheduled to be completed by the end of the month.
At this time the contractor is also busy constructing a temporary carriageway adjacent to Hoarwithy Road at Green Crize.
This temporary carriageway will allow single way flow under traffic lights to the east of the existing Hoarwithy Road while a new overbridge (which will carry Hoarwithy Road over the new access road) is constructed. This switch over is scheduled for May. Again, further details will be released closer to this date.
Finally, as works continue along the route, a number of public rights of way will be affected and whilst every effort has been made to minimise this impact, some temporary closures will be required.
Further details of these closures have been advertised in the local press and notices erected on site.
