Be a rotter this Easter

Easter weekend sees a significant rise in the number of people using Household Waste Sites across Herefordshire to dispose of their green garden waste.

Herefordshire Council is urging residents to get a compost bin to reduce the number of visits that they need to make to their local Household Waste Site and to keep their garden waste at home.

Grass cuttings mixed with shredded paper can make excellent compost. Using a shredder to deal with thicker, woody garden waste will also provide a good ingredient for compost and mixing the shreddings with grass cuttings will produce fantastic results.

Viktoria Salisbury, Project Development Officer for composting, said: “As the weather improves, many people like to get outside and tidy the garden ready for the summer months. This produces a massive increase in the amount of green waste which residents need to dispose of.

“Composting is an excellent way to turn this waste into a useful product for the garden and will also save you making a trip to the Household Waste Site.

“I would therefore encourage any residents who are not already composting to buy a compost bin and get composting. Similarly, it is a good time to resurrect any compost bins which have been left empty or unused at the bottom of the garden.

“Composting will not only save on trips to the Household Waste Site, but it will also save money as you will not need to buy compost,” added Viktoria.
