New crematorium moves step nearer

27 March 2007

Herefordshire Council’s plans for a new crematorium in Hereford have moved a step forward with a planning application due to be submitted in the next few weeks.

The existing crematorium in Westfaling Street has long been recognised as unsatisfactory. The current chapel is too small to hold the existing number of mourners and on occasions some have had to stand outside while services are relayed over a loud speaker.

Herefordshire Council has secured the capital funding needed to build a new crematorium. A site has been identified near to the existing crematorium and negotiations are under way to buy the land.

A contractor to build the new crematorium has been chosen and is in talks with Herefordshire Council officers over a suitable design for such a sensitive development.

It is anticipated detailed plans for the new crematorium will be submitted to Herefordshire Council’s planning department within the next few weeks.
