Council provides new premises for Citizens Advice Bureau

22 March 2007

Residents are to benefit from easier access to essential advice in Hereford, as Hereford’s Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has moved to new improved premises on St Owen Street.

Previously the service was based in poorly equipped, difficult to access accommodation, but thanks to a refurbishment project funded by Herefordshire Council, has moved further up the road to number eight which has much better facilities.

The total cost of the refurbishment was £158,000 which includes accommodation for the council’s social care team as well as the voluntary run citizens advice bureau.

The new premises have more interview rooms, better internet connections and easier access for members of the public.

CAB Manager, Claire Keetch, said: “We offer free, impartial independent and confidential information and advice on a wide range of issues.

“Some of the most common issues we deal with are around employment and debt, so it’s really important to have interview rooms where we can talk through what are often very sensitive issues with people.

“Last year we dealt with over 22,000 problems and we are very grateful for the council’s support which allows to continue this valuable service in better accommodation.”

Councillor Mike Wilson, cabinet member for resources, said: “The council values the work the bureau’s volunteers do which is why we’ve provided them with these newly refurbished premises in addition to the annual funding agreement we have with the bureau.”
