Feast of walks at Herefordshire Festival

09 March 2007

Walkers are being offered the perfect opportunity to explore Herefordshire on foot at the county's annual walking festival.

Now in its sixth year, the festival runs from June 16 to 24 and offers a programme of 60 guided walks throughout the county.

Walks are being run at all times of day including one to greet the dawn on Midsummer Day, to discover moths in the evening and listen to bats at night.

Other highlights are a walk with travel photographer Nick Meers who will teach those taking part how to maximise opportunities for photographs. There will also be a chance to have an archaeologist decipher features relating to medieval land use.

Many walks feature the flavours of Herefordshire and some include a chance to taste cider, home-made ice cream and real ale.

Longer walks are The Mortimer Trail which runs over three days and the Ross Round takes two days to complete.

Walks for children include a chance to become landscape detectives, to discover the Hedwigs of Herefordshire and one to unearth marvellous meadow minibeasts.

For people with mobility problems, Batteries Not Included walks will guide scooter users around Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum. Wheelchair users can also examine Leominster and its history in detail on a special walk while the more adventurous wheelchair driver can tackle the all ability trail in Mortimer Forest.

Jane Lewis, principal tourism development manager, said: “The walking festival has become established as one of the major events in Herefordshire’s calendar and is successful in encouraging visitors to the county.

“Not only does the festival have a wealth of interesting walks taking in historic sites and the county’s marvellous landscape, but they also offer the opportunity to taste some of Herefordshire’s famous produce such as cider, real ale and ice cream,” she added.

To book tickets, telephone the Festival Office on 01568 797842 or visit the website http://www.visitherefordshire.co.uk/ to download a brochure or book on line.
