The former Harewood Park House was demolished in 1959 and the Duchy of Cornwall sought permission to build a two-storey home on the same site and the scheme was given the go-ahead by members of the Southern Area Planning Sub-Committee meeting on January 24, 2007.
Planning consent for an architecturally appropriate house was given in 2004.
Detailed plans have now been approved and incorporate a significant range of energy saving design measures as well as addressing the important architectural issues demanded by the location.
A report by Herefordshire Council’s building conservation officer said: “This scheme has the potential to be a significant addition to Herefordshire’s architectural canon and is likely to attract national attention.”
On the ground floor principal rooms will be entrance hall, dining room, drawing room, sitting room, kitchen, library/study and orangery. Upstairs there will be six bedrooms. The total floor area is 789 square metres.
The Duchy of Cornwall has been regenerating the estate and aims to complete the restoration and conversion works at Home and Grange Farm by spring this year.
The application was supported by a design statement which said: “The house is the symbolic heart of the estate and its construction will give meaning to the whole project.
“The triumphal arch theme of the proposed house is not only important architecturally, but also symbolically,” the statement added.
A change in the law has meant that, as from June 2006, the Crown is now required to obtain planning permission.
