Views sought over Yazor Road cycleway

26 January 2007

Herefordshire Council is seeking the views of city residents over plans for a cycleway between Yazor Brook and the playground on Grandstand Road.

The proposed cycleway aims to offer a safe route for families to cycle between these two recreation areas in the city.

People are being asked to decide between three schemes. One scheme involves widening the existing carriageway to allow a dedicated cycle lane on each side of the road. Two of them would mean widening the existing footway on the east side of the road.

Of these two, one is for a 2.5m wide lane for unsegregated shared use by both cyclists and pedestrians. The other is for a 3.5m wide lane for segregated shared use where the footway would be divided into two parts, one for cycling and one for pedestrians.

The road widening proposal and the 3.5m wide lane would mean the felling of 10 mature trees and a number of mature shrubs together with moving eight lamp posts. Substantial earthworks would also be needed though the loss of trees could be partly compensated for with suitable replacements.

For the 2.5m wide route, however, only one tree would need felling (with a suitable replacement) and only six lamp posts would have to be moved.

Councillor Brian Wilcox, cabinet member for transportation, said: “I welcome plans for this cycleway which will enable families to safely travel between these two main leisure areas in the city.

“We are always keen to promote cycling which can both reduce the number of unnecessary car journeys and also bring health benefits. With this proposed scheme, there are aspects for and against each of the options and we would welcome any feedback about which of the three schemes is preferred.”

The consultation period ends on March 2, 2007.  Anyone who wishes to make comments on the scheme should send them to Herefordshire Council construction manager Andrew Culley at Unit 3, Thorn Business Park, Rotherwas Industrial Estate, Hereford, HR2 6JT or email to aculley@herefordshire.gov.uk

Details of all the schemes will be posted on this website.
