International day of disabled people

28 November 2006

Herefordshire Council is co-ordinating a big celebration of the achievements of local disabled people in Hereford’s High Town on Monday 4th December.

More than 20 stallholders will be promoting the services they provide for disabled people and raising funds by selling crafts and Christmas gifts in a huge heated marquee.

A Town Crier will be on hand to entertain people and entice them into the marquee with some close-up magic.

Participants include recycling artists Green Eyed Monster Company, and Hereford and Worcester Fire Rescue Service who will be promoting fire safety and services available to disabled people and the general public alike.

Organisations such as ECHO, Canal Road Day Centre and students from Hereford Art College will be selling a range of gifts which include screen-printed bags, cards, jewellery and Christmas decorations.

The Royal National College for the Blind will be offering massage and fitness testing, and promoting software and Braille services to businesses.

The Hereford Centre for Independent Living will be bringing people who use their services to chat to members of the public and show how ‘assistance dogs’ can make life easier for them around the home.

Harriet Yellin, Diversity Officer, says “We’ve organised this event to celebrate the United Nations international day of disabled persons which actually falls on Sunday 3rd December.  We decided to hold our event on the Monday as there are likely to be more people about.

“Hereford has some brilliant local groups who work with disabled people, and this is a great opportunity for them to promote the work they do.”
