Reuniting dogs with owners

14 November 2006

Herefordshire Council’s dog wardens are encouraging all owners to make sure their pets are either tagged or micro-chipped.

The appeal comes after 14 dogs that escaped after being frightened during Bonfire Night celebrations were successfully reunited with their owners.

Mike Higgins, Animal Health and Welfare Manager, said the dog wardens had been able to quickly reunite the dogs with their owners thanks to calls from members of the public who had found dogs but said this could have happened more quickly if all of the dogs had some form of identification.

Cllr Phil Edwards, cabinet member for the environment, said: “We would like to thank the public for all of their help in making sure these lost dogs were returned to their owners.

“However, if all owners had their pet dogs either micro-chipped or at least put an identification tag on them, it would really help us to reunite lost dogs with their owners much more quickly. These simple measures would cause less stress both to the animals and their owners,” he added.
