Thumbs up for Luston Primary School

17 October 2006

Children, staff and parents at Luston Primary School have been celebrating this week following receipt of an Ofsted Inspection report,  which confirmed that the school is effective and provides a good education for its pupils.

As a result of excellent academic results over the past few years, Luston School was chosen to undergo a new ‘light touch’ inspection, which took place on September 21 2006.

The inspection report said that the school’s 107 pupils achieve well because teaching is good and pastoral care is exceptional.

The Ofsted inspector noted the mixed range of skills and experiences that the children had when joining the school and said the progress they made academically and socially was significantly greater than average.

Derek Burbidge, headteacher said: “As the school’s reputation has grown, pupils have joined us from a wider geographical area which has brought the school many new challenges.

“Most of the school’s resources go into staffing, and with class numbers in the twenties rather than thirties, every child’s individuality is celebrated and their full potential realised.

“The very good progress made would not have been possible without the full support of pupils, parents, staff and governors.

“Members of the governing body are very pleased that leadership and management are recognised to be good,” said Adam Russell, chair of the governing body.

“Ofsted has highlighted the strong sense of teamwork amongst the staff and their ownership and pride in the school.”

Councillor Don Rule, cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “Herefordshire has some of the best schools in the country and Luston is continuing the list of successful schools.

“Luston school has worked hard for its pupils and this is reflected in the Ofsted report. Congratulations to the teachers, governors and parents, but most of all to the children who are obviously working happily and well."
