Hole dug at Castle Green

13 October 2006

Herefordshire Council is seeking expert advice from English Heritage after a hole was dug into the riverbank at Hereford’s historic Castle Green disturbing an 8th-century grave.

County archaeologists have been in touch with the organisation after they were tipped off that three people had been spotted digging the hole.

They found the secluded hole – 8ft at its deepest – hidden behind bushes.

“Castle Green is officially within an Area of Archaeological Importance and is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument,” said County Archaeologist Dr Keith Ray.

“Apart from having immense historical importance, the area is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a candidate Special Area For Conservation,” he added.

“This makes Castle Green one of the county’s most critically important sites both in terms of Herefordshire’s heritage and environment.

“We’re baffled about the reason the hole was dug – it’s very precise with sharp edges and straight sides.

“However, whoever did this needs to realise they’ve committed several criminal acts as they’ve damaged a Scheduled Ancient Monument and also contravened the Burials Act as they have disturbed an ancient grave.

“The police have been informed and we’d urge anyone who can help police with their inquiries to pass on any relevant information they have,” added Keith.

Anyone who can help the police should contact PC Clare Blagbrough on (08457) 444888, or use Crimestoppers on (0800) 555 111.

“Hereford’s wealth of heritage is well-known both nationally and internationally and we, as the local authority, take the responsibility of protecting our heritage extremely seriously.

“As a result we’re currently working with English Heritage and the Council’s Parks and Countryside Service to restore the damage that has been caused,” added Keith.
