You've got a voice - Now use it!

02 October 2006

Herefordshire’s young people are being urged to “shout up” rather than “shut up” in an event to establish what are the big issues they want tackled in the county.

The exciting event – the first major event to be organized by the county’s Youth Council – takes place on Saturday, October 21, at Hereford Sixth Form College.

It will give young people aged from 11 to 18 the opportunity to have their say and change their county.

“We’ve got loads of things going, including free workshops throughout the day - from rapping to street dancing - as well as free food and drinks for all,” said Clare Evans, aged 17, Chairperson of Herefordshire Youth Council.

“But that’s not all. There will also be an opportunity for young people to win prizes - like an iPod Shuffle - by taking part in the big interactive quiz and prize draw.

“We’re going to have a mass debate at the people's cafe at the college where young people will have their voices heard, and a video diary room.

“After the event the Youth Council will take what the young people say and put it forward to show decision-makers what young people in Herefordshire really want in their county.

“The young people in Herefordshire have never had such a chance to have their voices heard in such a powerful way.

“But we need to know what young people want and we can only do that if they turn up at the event and have their say.

“Without their support we can’t change anything,” added Clare.

“I’d urge anyone aged between 11 and 18 to get online to request an invite – visit www.herefordshireyouthcouncil.co.uk - or they should contact their local youth worker and get a booking form,” she added.
