Herefordshire Council celebrates National Bookstart Day with Teddy Bears Picnic

02 October 2006

Herefordshire Libraries are inviting parents/carers, babies and pre-school children to join them for a Teddy Bears Picnic to celebrate National Bookstart Day.

Youngsters with their favourite teddies will be able to enjoy stories, rhymes and making teddy masks this Friday, October 6, from 10.30am to 11.30am at Ross-on-Wye library, and from 2.15pm they’ll be able to enjoy a teddy bears picnic and story time at Leominster library.

Bookstart is a national programme that encourages parents and carers to enjoy books with children from as early an age as possible by giving them free books.

In Herefordshire, children receive a special Bookstart bag of free books from their Health Visitor at the nine month and two year health check.

Three-year-olds receive a treasure chest of books at their nursery, playgroup or local library.

“We aim to gift these wonderful books to every child in Herefordshire,” said Dawn Harwood, Herefordshire Bookstart Coordinator.

“Sharing books is fun and a great way to spend time with children,” she added.

“If you’re a parent/carer of a child under five years of age and would like to know more about Bookstart, please give me a call on (01432) 260646, or ask your local health visitor or library about details”.
