The new facility, unveiled on Wednesday, September, 20, is one of the most ambitious projects undertaken in the Town since the opening of its youth and community resource Centres in the mid 1990’s.
Co-hosted by the high school’s head teacher, John Barrie and the Leisure Centre’s Management committee Chairman, David Francis, the audience was treated to a show of the versatility of the new facility.
Invited guests and officials from the town and wider county enjoyed performances by the school’s year eleven dance team and the centre’s Shukokai Karate Club.
The new Studio, which is complimented on site by new toilet facilities to support community events at the school, a new PE office and extended equipment stores, was formally declared open by Cllr Roger Phillips, Leader of Herefordshire Council, an old boy and current Governor of the school, in conjunction with David Francis, Chairman of the centre’s management Committee.
The new Studio replaces two squash courts which were built when the Leisure Centre was opened in 1995.
“The centre and its continued development is a unique testimony to the spirit of partnership and community that exists within the town,” said Cllr Phillips.
“Lady Hawkins’ is a true Community School in every sense of the word. Its year on year successes are a credit to Kington and to Herefordshire as a whole,” he added.
The new Performing Arts Studio and Leisure Centre facilities can be booked by the public outside of school hours by contacting Lady Hawkins’ Community Leisure Centre on (01544) 230488.
