Final phase of Hereford revamp underway

19 September 2006

Work on the major revamp of Hereford’s High Town is well under way and the final phase is about to begin.

Workmen, who started at the Widemarsh Street end of High Town, have gradually moved closer to the Old House, and from Monday next week, September 25, they will begin work around this landmark building.

It means traffic will not be able to enter High Town from St Peter’s Street – access to High Town will be from Widemarsh Street, although light delivery vehicles will be allowed to enter Commercial Street from Commercial Square.

Light delivery vehicles will be allowed to enter St Peter’s Street, but they must turn round before exiting using the same route.

“Work began on this major project in May. The good news is that the first two phases of work have been completed on time – even allowing for us to withdraw the workmen during the Three Choirs Festival,” said Cllr Brian Wilcox, Cabinet Member (Highways and Transportation).

“This final phase of work should be completed by mid November, well in time for the switch on of our Christmas lights,” added Cllr Wilcox.

“We recognise the inconvenience and disruption this work has caused to both shoppers and traders in the city centre. We have tried to minimise this and will continue to do so during this final phase of work.

“I’m sure it will be worth waiting for!”

The Council is co-ordinating the work so no shops will have to close for business at any time. Signs will be put up to emphasise that all businesses are trading as usual, and other signs will show shop locations around the compound.
