Keeping paths clear of crops

22 May 2006

County farmers are being urged to ensure Rights of Way across their land are kept clear and unobstructed by crops this summer.

With tourism, and in particular walking in Herefordshire, becoming increasing popular, Herefordshire Council’s Public Rights of Way section is urging farmers to think about the implications of their actions.

The Footpath and Bridleway network is an increasing source of revenue in the County benefiting, among other, accommodation providers, pubs, restaurants and shops.

During 2005, 12.8 million visitors came to the county – it is estimated that nearly half of these visitors came primarily to use the footpaths and bridleways.

“We must protect this vital commodity, on which so much revenue to Herefordshire businesses depend,” said Tony Featherstone, Herefordshire Council’s Parks, Countryside and Leisure Development Manager.

“We’re reminding landowners that they are legally responsible for restoring the surface of any Public Right of Way across their land.

“There is nothing more frustrating for a family or group of walkers who have travelled to the County to find their chosen route is obstructed by crops.

“Clearing the crop makes a path clearly visible, making a pleasant experience for all users and also eliminates the need for walkers having to deviate off the footpath causing crop damage and unintentional trespass in order to find their way.

“Landowners are responsible under law to restore the surface of any path that has been ploughed, harrowed or disturbed.

“They should ensure that public paths are apparent on the ground, convenient to use and clear of any encroaching crops,” added Tony.
