It’s national Walk to School Week next week (22 - 26 May), and this year’s theme “Join the Adventure” encourages children to explore by walking to school.
In Herefordshire, schools are promoting alternatives to arriving by car for those for whom walking all the way to school is impossible – for example, parents can park a five or ten minute walk away from the school, or car-share with other families.
Children who come by bus can walk on a specified route around the playground and children who cycle are included.
Many primary schools across the county will be taking part in the week and 8,000 children will receive resources from Herefordshire Council – posters, booklets and stickers.
The Council’s School Travel Advisers are also conducting assemblies in many schools to talk about the week.
National Walk to School Coordinator, Donna McLoughlin, said: “Children need to play and explore, watch the seasons unfold, and see what people around them are up to.
“Walking primary-age children to school is a safe way to introduce them to the big outdoors, where you can teach them road safety and talk about the things you see.”
