15 May 2006

Herefordshire Council has scooped a national award for its commitment to green electricity – buying every watt from renewable energy sources to avoid adding to the greenhouse effect.

One of the largest UK energy suppliers, npower, presented the Renewable Energy Certificate to Herefordshire Council has scooped a national award for its commitment to green electricity – buying every watt from renewable energy sources to avoid adding to the greenhouse effect.

One of the largest UK energy suppliers, npower, presented the Renewable Energy Certificate to Cllr Phil Edwards, Cabinet Member (Environment), during the annual meeting of Herefordshire Council (Friday, May 12).

The council was recognised because 100 per cent of the electricity it purchases comes from renewable sources.

“Every unit of energy produced by renewal energy that the council buys replaces a unit that would have been produced by conventional generation,” said Cllr Edwards, “so our policy results in no greenhouse gas pollution released into the atmosphere.”

“Herefordshire Council needs to, and does, take a lead of environmental issues to encourage local businesses and households to save energy and cut the production of carbon dioxide.

“The way we buy and use electricity is part of our climate change strategy agreed under the Herefordshire Partnership,” he added.
