Passengers hopping on and off buses at the County Bus Station in Commercial Road will have noticed workmen tackling the wall which was inspected by a structural engineer after the authority had concerns over the condition of parts of the wall.
“The wall is in a conservation area and all the work is being carried out sympathetically,” said Conservation Officer Bill Bloxsome.
“We’re replacing a number of bricks which have deteriorated over time. These will be replaced with similar bricks and we shall use lime mortar.
“We’ve also been advised by the engineer that a small section on the top of the wall could come down in strong winds so we’re having to take this bit down.
“We’re aware of the historic significance of this wall and once the repairs have been carried out it should be safe for many years to come,” added Bill.
The repairs are due to be completed by the end of July.
