A swarm of bees which has invaded Hereford’s Museum has forced the temporary closure of the facility.
However, the library, on the ground floor of the building in Broad Street, remains open and is unaffected by the bees.
“We think they got into the building through an air vent,” said Heritage Services Visitor Services Officer, Lara Latcham.
“We normally have our own hive of bees resident in the museum. These bees are currently on holiday, due to return soon. This new swarm are nothing to do with the museum!”
The council cannot use a spray to get rid of the bees because of the sensitive items on display in the museum.
“As a result, we’ve had to close the doors and wait for the bees to die naturally. This could take a day or so,” added Lara.
It means the museum remains closed for the rest of today and at least tomorrow morning.
“We’ll assess the situation later tomorrow morning and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we will be able to open again tomorrow lunchtime.”
