Discover a new skill in Adult Learners' Week

11 May 2006

Spring is a time of renewal, so Herefordshire’s libraries and museums are offering adults the opportunity to discover new things and acquire new skills.

As part of Adult Learners Week an exciting range of activities are being organised across the county from Sunday, May 14 to Friday, May 26.

Highlights include “It’s only Words” workshops where everyone from novices to novelists can have fun playing with words, and “Silver Surfer” sessions, helping older citizens to click with e-mails and the Internet.

Those taking part will be able to test their knowledge of Herefordshire in a special quiz or try to name mystery museum objects, and those who really want to make an impression can have a go at printmaking.

All events are free, but places are limited.

“You’re never to old to learn a new skill or get a little better at what you do so these sessions are ideal for those who simply enjoy learning something new,” said Sarah Chedgzoy, Access and Learning Manager at Herefordshire Council.

“We’re looking for this year’s Adult Learners’ Week to be the biggest and best we’ve had in Herefordshire and emphasis will definitely be on having fun,” said Cllr. Stockton, Cabinet Member for Community and Social Development.

Anyone wanting to book a place should call either Sarah Chedgzoy or Julia Radburn on (01432) 260731, or contact the venue hosting the event.

‘It’s only Words’ workshops are being run by Sara-Jane Arbury, Herefordshire’s Writer in Residence. The sessions will be on Wednesday 24th May at Weobley Library (1:30 – 3:30 p.m.) and Ross Library (5:30 – 7:30 p.m.)

To make a booking contact Weobley Library 01544 318956 or Ross Library 01432 383280.

Silver Surfers can enjoy a guided session on Thursday 18th May with Colwall Library’s expert or book in to a session at Hereford & Leominster Libraries on Friday 26th May.

Leominster Library is also running drop-in sessions with the added twist of using poetry to explore the Internet. Beginners are encouraged to come along and find out about staying in touch with family and friends, searching for information and much more.

For more information and to book a place contact Colwall Library (01684) 540642; Hereford Library (01432) 383600; Leominster Library (01432) 383290.

A Printmaking Workshop provided by the Sidney Nolan Trust will be held on Thursday 25th May 9.30am –3pm at the Bromyard Centre.

Participants will get a chance to use an etching press and learn intaglio printing techniques such as drypoint and collagraph. The workshop is free and all materials are provided.

Places are limited so advance booking is essential. Call The Bromyard Centre (01432) 260280.
