Libraries go multi-lingual

11 May 2006

Herefordshire Council has responded to the growing number of non-English users of its libraries by providing key information in a variety of languages.

It will mean the increasing numbers of foreign visitors and workers in Herefordshire will find it easier to make use of the facilities in the county’s 10 libraries.

From Saturday, May 20, each library will have printed and electronic information available in Portuguese, Russian and Polish.

The information includes library guides, terms and conditions, how to join, and details of how to access the computers in the libraries.

“This new service aims to benefit both staff and customers and the information we’re providing in different languages reflects the areas that staff deal with most frequently,” said Mick Ligema, Assistant Cultural Services Manager.

“The launch of this multi-lingual service is further evidence of our commitment to the needs of an increasingly diverse population, regardless of whether their presence is temporary or permanent,” said Cllr Roy Stockton, Cabinet Member for Community and Social Development.

For further information on the service please contact any of the Herefordshire Libraries after Saturday, May 20.
