Youth Council on the starting blocks

10 May 2006

Members of Herefordshire’s new voice for its youth have brought their problem-solving skills into use for the first time – at a teambuilding event for the newly formed Youth Council.

The 20 young people who were voted onto the Youth Council recently spent a weekend at the Dinedor Outdoor Centre.

The two-day event included outdoor physical activities, problem solving, and workshops that focused on identifying personal and team skills, representation, equality and diversity, community mapping, communication and internal procedures of the Youth Council.

The new skills were put into practice when the team went on to elect its seven-strong committee on the Saturday evening, which will steer the group for the next year with a review of positions after 6 months.

Those elected onto the committee within the Youth Council were:

  • Chairperson: Clare Evans
  • Vice Chair: Cat Stace
  • Secretary: Alexander Woodcock
  • Vice/Assist Secretary: Ruth Nicoll
  • Treasurer: Anna Therese-McGivern
  • Vice/Assist Treasurer: Andrew Brown
  • Publicity/PR Officer: Rosie Lunt

On the Sunday afternoon, the Leader of the Herefordshire Council, Cllr Roger Phillips, met with the Youth Council committee to discuss issues of support, direction and communication.

“It was a privilege to be there at the start of this new and important venture for the young people of the county and to witness such interest and enthusiasm,” said Cllr Roger Phillips.

Since then the Youth Council has held its first official meeting which included a review of the Dinedor event and the establishment of procedures, targets and priorities.

“The team is in its early days, much was covered at the residential but there is still a lot more to do. The Youth Council will determine their direction over the coming weeks and months.

“The members are very keen to hear from anyone with potential issues, project ideas or useful links for the Youth Council,” said Amy Lunt, Herefordshire Council’s Youth Involvement Worker.
