Working in partnership for the people of Herefordshire

High Town refurbishment continues

02 May 2006

The next phase of a £2 million scheme aimed at breathing new life into Hereford city centre will start next week.

Shiffnall-based contractors Wrekin Construction will move on site on Monday May 8 to start work on High Town.

The aim of the project, headed by Herefordshire Council in partnership with consultants Owen Williams, is to create a more attractive and pleasant street environment throughout High Town.

As part of the works programme the whole area will be repaved, new lighting columns installed, street clutter cleared and the surroundings of the Old House enhanced.

The first phase will include the reconstruction of carriageway and paved areas at the end of Widemarsh Street into Bewell Street and also into High Town.

Works will begin after the May Fair and will require the closure of Widemarsh Street, Bewell Street and High Street to all traffic from May 8 to July 14. Access for delivery vehicles and taxis will be maintained.

The paving works will then continue in phases towards the Old House where natural stones will be included. Here there will also be an area with a cobbled theme in keeping with the character of this historic building.

The street furniture (lighting, seating, litter bins and signage) will also be improved throughout the area.

The council’s partnership consultants, Owen Williams, have engaged specialist architects to assist in developing the sensitive streetscape design required for this key area of the city.

The scheme will be complete in time for the busy Christmas shopping season and works will be suspended during the Three Choirs Festival.

Pedestrian access will be maintained to all premises during the works and the council will be working closely with the contractors to minimise any disruption or inconvenience during the project.

Cllr Brian Wilcox, Cabinet Member (Highways and Transportation), said: “Once complete, High Town will be an improved environment for everyone to enjoy.

“A great deal of careful thought has gone into the design of the scheme to promote a vibrant city centre including taking advice from architects who specialise in historic city centre refurbishments.

“The contributions from the public have been very important and I would like to thank them for their participation during the consultation periods.

“Clearly, there will be disruption while the works are in process and I would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience.”
