Free bus travel

23 March 2006

Thousands of senior citizens and disabled people are set to benefit from free local bus travel when Herefordshire Council launches its new Concessionary Travel Scheme on Saturday, April 1.

Under the new scheme anyone aged 60 or over and disabled people will be able to travel free of charge on all buses in Herefordshire and neighbouring counties.

Currently Herefordshire Council’s concessionary scheme provides only half price bus travel.

Cllr Brian Wilcox, Cabinet Member (Highways and Transportation), said: “Herefordshire Council is widening the Concessionary Travel Scheme further than the Government requires by placing no time restrictions on the pass or by limiting it to journeys within the county, completely free of charge.

“That means senior citizens as well as disabled people will be able to travel whenever they wish rather than at off-peak times only.

“This is excellent news and will help both senior citizens as well as disabled people to make more use of the bus to access the local services they need.

“By offering free bus travel I hope it will encourage more people to use public transport and so reduce congestion and the number of cars on our roads.”

People who already have a pass for the current concessionary scheme will be able to carry on using it to obtain free travel from April 1 and need not re-apply.

Any eligible person without a pass who would like to get one should complete an application form available from Post Offices throughout the county.
