But now that the work is complete, the widely supported pedestrianisation of Widemarsh Street comes back into force, meaning traffic will be able to use Widemarsh Street and High Street after 4.30pm and before 10.30am.
“As a result, the barriers at Widemarsh Street’s junction with Blue School Street will be dropped into place on Monday morning, (March 6) at 10.30am, as during the pedestrianisation trial,” said Cllr Brian Wilcox, Cabinet Member (Highways and Transportation).
“The refurbishment work between Burtons and the HSBC Bank, has been completed two weeks earlier than expected.
“We know this 24-hour closure to traffic has caused a certain amount of inconvenience to motorists and we thank them for bearing with us during the last couple of months,” added Cllr Wilcox.
When Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet gave the green light for the pedestrianisation of Widemarsh Street, its members took on board the impact the trial had on many city centre users.
The authority is part-way through a study to explore what improvements could be made to address the concerns of, among others, retailers, taxi drivers, coach companies and disabled drivers.
