The Council is providing the bulk of cash for the new nursery which will cost around £500,000, with other contributions coming from Kington Primary School and the Friends of Kington Primary School which are running various fundraising events.
The nursery currently operates out of a mobile unit on site at Kington Primary School. The new facility will cater for 26 nursery children and a small early years group.
The new nursery is being built to meet sound sustainable and environmental requirements.
Natural materials have been selected wherever possible such as timber from sustainable sources and paints and other preservatives that are water based.
To conserve energy, the building will be well insulated with all windows double-glazed. Under floor heating has been selected to ensure the building is evenly heated. The new nursery will have full disabled access and will meet all requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.
An enhanced outdoor learning area is also included in the plans for the new building, which will benefit children both at the nursery and the primary school.
It is anticipated that the building will be completed by July 2006, with the children moving in during September this year. The outdoor area will take a little longer
“I’m delighted that we can provide the children of Kington with this much needed facility,” said Cllr Don Rule, Cabinet Member (Children’s Services).
“We’re working very closely with the school and the community to ensure that the new facility meets the needs of the nursery and brings additional benefits for the school,” he added.
“We’re looking forward to the nursery becoming part of the main building and the exciting opportunities that the improved facilities will give the children,” said Mrs Anne Phillips, Headteacher of Kington Primary School.
“Everyone’s behind the project with the Friends of Kington Primary School contributing funds and our year six pupils are currently looking at ways in which the former nursery space can be developed,” she added.
