Healthy cooking classes

06 February 2006

County youngsters will cook up a storm as part of an interactive culinary class aimed at raising awareness of healthy eating.

Herefordshire Council’s Early Years and Childcare Partnership will stage the event, based on TV hit programme ‘Ready Steady Cook’, for youngsters and childcare workers at Withington Village Hall, near Hereford, during half-term on February 15, from 2pm - 4pm.

Food experts will be on hand to introduce healthy recipes and advise on nutritious food and balanced diets before participants pit their culinary skills against the clock.

Julia Stephens, Children’s Services Development Officer for the EYDCP, said: “Children need to be given the best start in life and this includes eating healthy food.

“We need to introduce good eating patterns at an early age before bad habits set in.”

The Herefordshire EYDCP works closely with childcare practitioners across the county to promote healthy eating for all children.

A series of training workshops have already been staged to raise awareness of good nutritious eating including healthy lunchboxes, healthy lunches and suppers and healthy snacks.

“This will be a great opportunity for the children to become involved directly and see for themselves that there are desirable and delicious alternatives to junk food,” added Julia Stephens.

“This will be a fun, interactive, educational and flavoursome day out.”
