I'm dreaming of a green Christmas...

23 December 2005

Herefordshire Council Waste Management team is encouraging residents to think about what they do with their old items when the Christmas festivities are over.

Residents who are lucky to upgrade any electrical items or furniture over the Christmas period are often left with the unenviable task of disposing of the old appliance.

However, there is an alternative to a trip down to your local household waste site.

In Herefordshire and Worcestershire many not-for-profit organisations will gladly take unwanted items that are still in good condition, conserving the environment by diverting these resources from landfill and supporting a whole host of good causes. Local charity shops are also able to accept donations and re-sell.

Laura Preece, Herefordshire Council’s Recycling Officer, said: “Post-Christmas unwanted presents or household items that have been replaced by newer more modern presents can be donated to various non-profit organisations.

“This not only prevents things going to landfill sites but also preserve natural resources involved in the production of new goods. This New Year reduce the number of items going to landfill-re-use and recycle.”

It is estimated Britain creates more than three million tonnes of rubbish this Christmas.

Herefordshire Council supports re-use initiatives as part of their waste minimisation strategy.
