New Year start for High Street revamp

23 December 2005

Work to extend the major revamp of Eign Gate into Hereford city’s High Street begins early in the New Year.

As a result, from Monday, January 9, High Street will be closed to traffic for up to ten weeks to allow workmen to carry out the refurbishment work from Burtons to HSBC Bank.

“This work will require the closure of Widemarsh Street, High Street and part of Broad Street (between High Street and West Street) to through traffic, although we have allowed for delivery vehicles and taxis to use Widemarsh Street,” said Stephen Oates, Head of Highways and Transportation.

“The work includes a new drainage system which means we need to construct a new deep manhole at the junction of High Street with Widemarsh Street,” he added.

During the closure, the experimental pedestrianisation scheme in Widemarsh Street will be suspended and the gates at the bottom of Widemarsh Street will be kept open all day for deliveries.

“Smaller delivery vehicles will be able to enter Widemarsh Street, deliver and turn around leaving the way they came in, at any time of day.

“Larger vehicles will have to pull up at the top of Widemarsh Street by JD’s and trolley goods to the shops.

“Delivery drivers have been asked to take particular care, but pedestrians need to be aware that vehicles may be present at any time of day,” said Stephen.

This work is part of a wider scheme to improve Hereford city centre.

“We apologise in advance for the inconvenience likely to be caused by these refurbishment works, but we believe the resulting improvements will make the city centre a more attractive place to shop and visit”.
