Public urged to attend scrutiny meeting

29 November 2005

Hereford City centre’s £2 million High Town refurbishment scheme will go under the spotlight during a public meeting next month (December).

Herefordshire Council’s Community Services Scrutiny Committee will analyse the public consultation process staged recently as part of the overall enhancement scheme.

Members of the public are being urged to attend the Scrutiny Committee meeting - which is chaired by Cllr Chris Chappell - at Hereford Town Hall, on December 14, at 6pm.

Detailed questions on the consultation process, or any other agenda items, must be submitted in writing to Craig Goodall, Herefordshire Council, Brockington, HR1 1SH, at least 48 hours before the meeting.

Under the High Town refurbishment scheme new paving will be installed, improved street furniture provided, clutter cleared and landscaping work carried out. Contractors are expected to start work in the New Year.

As part of the High Town refurbishment consultation, staged in October, a cabin displaying drawings of the scheme was erected, a presentation was given to Hereford City Council and other interested parties and questionnaires were distributed.

Other items on the agenda of the Scrutiny Committee meeting are Hereford’s tourism needs and a presentation on the museum service.

Cllr Chris Chappell, Chairman of Community Services Scrutiny Committee, said: “We are staging the Scrutiny Committee meeting during late night Christmas shopping in Hereford.

“We hope that by doing so it will make the meeting more accessible to the public.

“Scrutiny plays an important role in local democracy and it is important that the public gets involved in the local decision-making process.”
