The day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and rally support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities.
It also seeks to increase awareness of the benefits to be gained from the integration of disabled people in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
The event has been held on December 3, each year since a UN proclamation in October 1992.
To celebrate the International Day of the Disabled Hereford Library and Museum is holding an open day on December 3, to highlight the range of equipment and services available for disabled users.
Some of the measures the Council has implemented at Hereford Library and Museum to make it more accessible include sound guides, an innovative ‘Talking Tactile Tablet’, which provides a textured surface to allow users to "feel" diagrams and drawings, and accessible computers.
Guided tours will leave the library foyer at 10.30am, 12noon and 1.30pm on December 3. There’s no need to book and a British Sign Language interpreter will accompany each tour.
As well as holding a series of training and awareness events for its staff, the Council is also supporting ECHO (Extra Choices in Herefordshire) in running a training day for the voluntary sector in Disability Equality.
The Council is also pleased to be supporting Herefordshire People’s Advocacy in launching its Bill of Rights for people with learning disabilities.
