Free concessionary bus pass

21 November 2005

Senior citizens and the disabled across Herefordshire have been thrown a transport lifeline after Herefordshire Council agreed to fund a new free bus pass.

Under the Concessionary Fares Scheme more than 50,000 people, aged 60 or over, will be able to travel for free on all buses in the County from next April.

At the moment Herefordshire Council’s Concessionary Fares Scheme provides half price bus travel.

Cabinet agreed to expand the scheme last week (November 17).

Cllr Brian Wilcox, Cabinet Member (Highways and Transportation), said: “This is excellent news and will help both the elderly as well as disabled people across Herefordshire to make more use of the bus to access the local services they need.

“By offering free bus travel I hope it will encourage more people to use public transport and so reduce the number of cars on our roads.”

People who already have a pass for the current scheme will be able to use their existing pass to obtain free travel from next April.

Anyone without a pass who would like to get one should complete an application form available from Post Offices throughout the County.
