The artefacts are being shown at Hereford Museum and Art Gallery, Broad Street, as part of ‘Hidden Histories,’ a two-month exhibition featuring finds from the Hereford Metal Detecting Club.
As part of the exhibition, Peter Reavill, Finds Liaison Officer, will also stage a series of ‘Finds Identification Days’ at the museum to help members of the public identify and record their finds.
Peter can identify most types of finds and can also advise on cleaning and storage of objects. He will also inform visitors if their find qualifies as ‘treasure’ under the Treasure Act.
The ‘Finds Identification Days’ are free and will be held on November 25, January 27 and February 24, from 1pm to 4pm, at Hereford Museum and Art Gallery, Broad Street.
Hidden Histories will run until January 9 and as well as highlighting recent finds from across the County, it will also show the successful links forged between the Portable Antiquities Scheme and Hereford Metal Detecting Club.
“These finds represent everyday losses by people in the past, although many artefacts are not exceptionally pretty they each have a small hidden history to tell. By recording them we can get a better idea of the activities of people in the past,” said Peter Reavill.
“I am particularly keen to hear from people who use metal detectors. Metal detector users are a valuable source of information and help enormously to record our past. “
Hereford Metal Detecting Club meets at the Brewers Arm pub, Eign Road, Hereford, every second Monday of the month from 8pm. New members are welcome.
