Opening of new nursery at Ledbury Primary School

08 November 2005

Children and parents will join staff of the nursery at Ledbury Primary School when Councillor Don Rule, Cabinet Member, Children’s Services, will officially open the new purpose-built facility on Wednesday November 9.

Since September, 52 three–four year old children from Ledbury and the surrounding villages have settled in to either five morning or afternoon sessions a week at the nursery, led by nursery teacher Mrs Rose Burrow and nursery nurse Mrs Lindsey Somers.

The building, funded by Herefordshire Council, was designed in partnership with Owen Williams Consultants and constructed by EG Carter and Co. Ltd at a cost of £400,000, and  replaces the previous wooden classroom and was designed to maximise the children’s development and well-being.

It is light and airy, warm and well ventilated with specific areas for messy and creative play, ICT, imaginative and role-play, construction and building and quiet room for books and puzzles.

A soft-surfaced, covered veranda means children can play outside in most weathers and other playground features provide imaginative play opportunities.

A ‘roadway’ gives children choices of direction and speed while manoeuvring around corners and a roundabout on bikes and trikes, and plenty of grass and a ‘hill’ allow children to play and explore in safety.

The new building is attached to the five-year-old reception block, to help children make a seamless transition from nursery to reception and allowing the best possible start to each child’s education.

“Our new nursery unit offers the finest standards and resources available in Herefordshire and the surrounding counties,” said Mrs Celia Naylor, Head teacher of Ledbury Primary School.

“The excellent established teaching standards combined with the new environment and range of equipment gives every child who attends a wonderful start to their school years.”

Cllr Rule, Cabinet Member, Children’s Services said: “As chairman of Children’s Services and local councillor for Ledbury, it gives me twice the pleasure to see such wonderful provision for 3 and 4 year-olds in the Ledbury area”.
