The CCTV cameras, initially installed in the mid 1990s, have been upgraded and linked to the County’s main control room in Hereford where they will be monitored by staff after new high speed connections were installed.
The work, supported by a joint grant from Herefordshire Council, the Ledbury Market Towns Initiative, West Mercia Constabulary and Ledbury Town Council, has seen the cameras converted from tape to digital.
Images from all five cameras in High Street, Market Place Restaurant, High Street/Worcester Road, Walled Garden and Church Lane, will now be stored on the system’s hard drive at the control room where they can be easily accessed.
The Leader of Herefordshire Council, Cllr Roger Phillips, will officially switch the cameras on at the ceremony, in Shirehall, Hereford, tonight (Sep 14) at 7pm.
“Herefordshire Council, a key partner in the Herefordshire Community Safety and Drugs Partnership, which manages CCTV, strongly supports CCTV cameras as an effective crime fighting tool,” said Cllr Roger Phillips.
“People in Ledbury will be reassured to know that these cameras will now be monitored by staff at the control room who can respond to incidents as they happen.
“Crime and the perception of crime are a big concern to people across Herefordshire. CCTV cameras are a proactive way of tackling those fears.
“The upgrade will also assist police investigations by allowing officers to sift through footage much more efficiently.”
