Pedal power week

26 May 2005

Schoolchildren and office workers are being urged to shun the car for pedal power as part of a nationwide campaign to get people cycling.

Herefordshire Council’s Highways and Transportation is supporting this year’s “Bike Week,” from June 11 – 19.

The week-long bonanza of events includes a charity bikeathon in Hereford, a cycle to work day in Rotherwas and family fun bike ride in Hereford.

Organisers are predicting that hundreds of people will take part across the county while around 300,000 cyclists are set to mount their bikes all over the UK.

“Bike Week” dates back to 1923 when cycle campaigners first launched the event. Now more than 15 organisations lend their help to organise the annual event.

Herefordshire Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, Cllr Brian Wilcox, said: “As ever Bike Week is eagerly anticipated here in Herefordshire.

“Across the county families, clubs and individuals are preparing to take part in events.

“Bike Week is a fantastic initiative which Herefordshire Council wholeheartedly supports.

“Herefordshire is a beautiful county and the best way to appreciate the countryside is to get on your bike and cycle.”

Herefordshire Bike Week kicks-off with the Hereford Bikeathon at Bishop’s Meadow, on June 12, from 11am – 1pm. Participants are being asked to do a sponsored cycle over a distance of their choice. Proceeds are in aid of Leukaemia Research.

As part of Bike2Work Week, which runs in partnership, staff at Rotherwas Industrial Estate, South Wye, will be offered a free breakfast from Picadish, on Netherwood Road, if they bike to work on Wednesday, June 14.

A cycling group will also complete a route around the city as part of a family event on Friday, June 17.
