The small V.E.Day Exhibition held at the Market House Heritage Centre, in Ross-on-Wye, proved to be a real hit with visitors.
Members of staff at the centre were very pleased with the response from people both from Ross-on-Wye itself and also visitors from far away.
Dutch visitors on Sunday, May 8, enjoyed the exhibition and comparing the information to their own experiences in 1945 when they heard the parade taking part in the Market House.
They told Mary Sinclair Powell, Senior Heritage Assistant, how lovely it was to not only take part in their own event earlier in the week, but also to be a part of the English commemorations.
“It had made their holiday. Thanks to the many offers of items, many of which could not be taken for display due to the lack of space, it is hoped the exhibition can be done again for the V.J. Commemoration in August,” said Mary.
She added that she would like to thank all those who took part in setting up the exhibition.
The rest of May continues with an Exhibition and Sale of Photographic Prints by John Gibson-Fortey. John’s work is totally different to anything seen at the Centre before and is well worth a visit.
The work will be on display until June 1.
Bank Holiday Weekend, May 28 to May 30, will see the return of some of the Craft Workshops the Centre has become famous for.
These will compliment the Visual Arts Day being run on Bank Holiday Monday at the Market Place, when there will be stalls, singing and dancing to entertain all ages. The Belly Dancers will be making a return visit to Ross for the day.
May is National Museums Month. Each year there is a theme for the month amongst all Museums and Heritage Centre.
This year it is “Collecting”. To compliment this the Heritage Centre will be running three activity days during half term.
On Tuesday, May 31, and Thursday, June 2, local people can “Be Their Own Curator For The Day”.
This is mainly aimed at the younger generation, but adults can attend if they wish - contributors will be able to set up their own displays of their collections and talk to visitors about them.
This is a free activity, but booking is essential due to the space available. Booking forms can be obtained at Heritage Centre.
On Wednesday, June 1, there will be a young peoples activity “Toys, Toys, Toys”.
Educators from Hereford Museum will be bringing a selection of old toys from the collections. Visitors will be able to study them and perhaps make their own toy.
The session will be taking place between 10.30am and 1pm. This is a free activity, suitable for young people and the young at heart. Children must be accompanied. There is no need to book for this one – just drop-in.
Further details on all the above, and more, can be obtained by telephoning (01432) 260675, between the opening hours of 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, and 10.30am to 4pm on Sundays.
