The Streetscene Kangaroo character is here to remind people how we should keep our town centres, highways and byways clean to make Herefordshire a pleasant place to be.
“Katie the Clean-up Kangaroo” is here to remind us that it costs more than £800,000 a year to clean our streets - money that could be better spent on more important things if we all took a little more care.
Her message is “No bin? – pick a pocket to put it in” and she is seen collecting some of the money that could be saved by not having to clean the streets so often.
Officially, Streetscene is defined as “an integrated approach to the management of services to enhance the public safety and satisfaction in the street environment,” and is a joint project between Herefordshire Council and Herefordshire Jarvis Services.
For the people living or visiting in Herefordshire, Streetscene is about our surroundings being clean, tidy, safe and overall, a nice place to be.
Over the coming months other members of the Streetscene animal gang will highlight specific issues such as anti-social flytipping and graffiti, both of which contribute to the £1+ million costs for clean up each year.
“The whole Streetscene gang can also be seen on Council/Herefordshire Jarvis Services vans and lorries, and in areas where Streetscene works are being carried out.
Graham Dunhill, Director of Environment, said: “We’re trying to reinforce the message about keeping our environment clean and pleasant in the friendliest way we can.
“The animal signs attract attention across the county but bring with them specific, serious messages. The animal characters are also important in our education campaign for pre-school and primary school pupils.”
The Streetscene hotline for reporting environmental issues such as graffiti, flytipping and excess litter is (01432) 261800. Streetscene is for everyone and encourages everyone to do their bit to keep Herefordshire the place we all want it to be.
