Discover Herefordshire's historical gems

Herefordshire Council’s Heritage Services is proud to announce the first public open day of the Museum Resource and Learning Centre in Friar Street, Hereford.

The open day will be held on Monday May 2, 11am – 3pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the facility as well as participate in hands-on activities related to objects from the collections. Admission to this event is free.

The state of the art Museum Resource and Learning Centre is the result of years of planning and support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The centre holds the County’s heritage items in an ideal climate-controlled environment.

As the site is at the second phase of the three-phase development the activities will be taking place under gazeboes outside.

Until now the impressive variety of objects in the collection have been dispersed around the county in less than perfect conditions.

The newly refurbished, former BT Repeater Station site, has united all the collection (except the art collection), held in trust for the county by the museum service for the first time and ensures its wellbeing and conservation.

More importantly the new arrangements give the public the first opportunity to see many of the items.

“It’s going to be a fun and interesting day,” says Principal Heritage Officer, Kate Andrew.

“The whole Heritage Services team is excited to have this opportunity to show the public this wonderful new facility.”

Judy Stevenson, Collections and Access Officer, said, “we are able to offer the best ever access to the collection to date.”

“We are now able to show the public the richness of their county’s heritage without compromising the safety and condition of the objects,” she added.

Laa Latcham, Visitor Services Officer, said, “there will be coil pot making as well as the opportunity to try out some of our educational resources and view the county’s Traveller wagon.”

“Tours of the facility will show store one, where smaller objects are stored and store two, where you can see anything from bicycles to bathroom furniture - it’s a fascinating collection.”

Unfortunately there is no parking available in Friar Street and visitors should use the nearby public car park at Greyfriars and then walk up to the Resource Centre in Friar Street behind Saint Nicholas Church.

This Public Open Day will be the first of a series of open days through the year and the team at Heritage Services are already planning Archaeology Day in July and Heritage Open Day in September.

The Museum Resource and Learning Centre has been generously supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Herefordshire Council.
